Reinventing a classic

The TEMPOGRAPH NEO Onyx boldly conjugates an ingenious 20-second retrograde mechanism with one of the brand's classic cases and a modern, streamlined dial.

This limited edition of 28 pieces is adorned with onyx, a deep black, spellbinding stone that has been a favourite since antiquity. Its hue adds depth and brilliance to the dial and provides a strong contrast to the visible mechanical elements. Onyx has always been ascribed magical powers.

Original

Rediscovering a signature case

The ORIGINAL case, with a 44-millimetre diameter, was the first to have been used for the 20-seconds retrograde complication and has thus become one of the great classics of the Louis Moinet brand.

It is made of stainless steel and has a sophisticated architecture with 64 components. The finishing is a delightful example of the watchmaking art, with surfaces skilfully combining brushed and polished sections that subtly bring out the various parts of the case.

Take, for example, the staggered bezel, which is firmly mounted with six screws and elegantly plays with light and shadows. Straight lines contrast expressively with the softness of the rounded flanks. The latter has been delicately brushed and reveals the prestigious signature of Louis Moinet.

The other noteworthy element is the crown guard with an interchangeable tube. It is composed of an independent stem integrated into a water-resistant mechanism. The whole section is affixed to the barrel by four screws.

As for the lugs, they have been decorated with black spinels subtly inserted into chatons. The balance of functionalities and aesthetic details is what gives the case ORIGINAL its unique quality.

The dial

The magic of black onyx

The magical elegance of this mysterious stone pays homage to the passage of time on the TEMPOGRAPH NEO Onyx. The pristine blackness of the carefully crafted onyx plates accentuates both the off-centre dial for the minutes and hours and the 20-second retrograde segment. This mesmerising precious stone also creates a striking contrast with the steeliness of the case and visible mechanism.

Merging the technical with the aesthetic

The TEMPOGRAPH NEO features two distinct visual zones, a creative decision clearly dictated by the desire to exhibit a dominant visual concept. The right side of the dial is devoted to time indications, with the twenty-second retrograde hand and a subdial for the hours and minutes. The left side offers a deep view of the mechanism needed for this horological creation. As for the 18-screw balance, its oscillations are a reminder that the timepiece operates at a rate of 480 vibrations per minute, which corresponds to 28,800 per hour.

Twenty-minute retrograde as exclusive animation

At the centre, the retrograde hand performs a fascinating ballet, counting off a 20-second segment before returning to its initial position to begin again. This first choreography is complemented by a second, more subtle animation, located at 9 o'clock. A blue, black, and red counter marks the three twenty-second sequences that make up each minute. The whole is completed by a subdial at four o'clock that gives the time.

Why 20 seconds ?

The retrograde mechanism

An instant return to point zero

The TEMPOGRAPH NEO’s retrograde seconds mechanism is a highly technical horological complication.

It involves the retrograde seconds hand A to perform its choreography 4,320 times a day, returning instantly to the zero point.

To ensure the precise and reliable movement of the pointer, two ingenious elements had to be developed. Firstly, there is the rake B, which drives the seconds hand and has a ruby tip.

Every twenty seconds, this rake falls into the notch of a three-armed cam C, returning the hand to its initial position. It is therefore essential that the tip of the rake be made of a wear-resistant material like ruby.

Finally, a silicon return spring D ensures constant force and precision. This material has many advantages, including resistance to shock and temperature variations as well as stability over time.
